IMO Tier III regulations require a 74% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared to Tier II levels and vessels keeled on or after 1 January 2016 will require IMO Tier III certified engines when they travel in NOx Emissions Control Areas (NECA).
These NECAs currently cover the coast of North America and the Caribbean islands that are part of the United States. The IMO also decided at its 71st meeting (MEPC71) to designate the North Sea and the Baltic Sea as NECA from 1 January 2021.
To help you comply with these new regulations, Mive Eco has launched the CombiClean waste system. This innovative solution combines a diesel particle burner, a silencer/muffler for noise level compliance and, if required, a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit and a heat exchanger. According to many marine engine manufacturers, if conventional fuel is used, the new IMO Tier III regulations cannot be satisfied only through adaptations made within the engines themselves: the exhaust gas after-treatment must provide at least part of the answer.
